Christmas Cards: A Poem

Image

CHRISTMAS CARDS

Slip through the letter box with messages:
Some bland, some more intense, some aching with
Bereavements, wives abandoned, loss of jobs.

The annual contact on a patient card.
‘See you next year’ some say and quite forget
Before the ink is dry. A plaster patch

That leaves no sticky mark on minor wounds
However much the cover faces please
With coloured art or kitsch or nearly art.

One threatens every time in wiry script
‘This is the last card I shall send.  I am
Too old now’.  Still it slides into my hand.

And there is one that comes anonymous,
Unsigned, the postmark adds its mystery,
A smudge, a ghost behind this paper mask?

Perhaps there’ll be a few to tuck away
After the show, in an old envelope,
Fingered at times because the sender once

Carved hope into a fraction of your years;
Or others will imply ‘I am still here’ -
A comma on your page a life ago.

~ contra omnia discrimina

{for my friend, Chris - who's comma was indeed an open chapter}

The Mower "we should be careful of each other, we should be kind, while there is still time"

Image

The mower stalled, twice; kneeling, I found
A hedgehog jammed up against the blades,
Killed. It had been in the long grass.

I had seen it before, and even fed it, once.
Now I had mauled its unobtrusive world
Unmendably. Burial was no help:

Next morning I got up and it did not.
The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful

Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

The Battlefield

Your soul is oftentimes a battlefield, upon which your reason and your
judgment wage war against your passion and your appetite.
Would that I could be the peacemaker in your soul, that I might turn
the discord and the rivalry of your elements into oneness and melody.
But how shall I, unless you yourselves be also the peacemakers, nay,
the lovers of all your elements?

Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your
seafaring soul. If either your sails or your rudder be broken, you can
but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas.
For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion,
unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction. Therefore
let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion, that it may
sing;
And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live
through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above
its own ashes.

I would have you consider your judgment and your appetite even as you
would two loved guests in your house. Surely you would not honour one
guest above the other; for he who is more mindful of one loses the
love and the faith of both.

Among the hills, when you sit in the cool shade of the white poplars,
sharing the peace and serenity of distant fields and meadows -- then
let your heart say in silence, "God rests in reason." And when the
storm comes, and the mighty wind shakes the forest, and thunder and
lightning proclaim the majesty of the sky -- then let your heart say
in awe, "God moves in passion."
And since you are a breath in God's sphere, and a leaf in God's
forest, you too should rest in reason and move in passion.

John Grant: Queen of Denmark Full Album Lyrics

TC And Honeybear

For TC and his Honeybear, the world will not moving
For rendezvous and longing stares and hearts that won't stop burning
Before that Honeybear had given up, He felt so sad and lonely
Then one night he looked up and he saw, he saw his One and Only

When TC came onto the scene, He entered in on golden wings
And with him he brought butterflies, of crimson red and emerald green
Cause before Tc Honeybear was waiting, was waiting for him patiently
Tc took his fears away, became his One and Only

The world came crashing down on them, with all of its ferocity
And Honeybear was terrified, he said do not take him take me
Before that Honeybear had given up, he felt so sad and lonely
Then one night he looked up and he saw, he saw his One and Only
And He said, Please don't take Him, 'cause I love Him, He's my joy and my Life

For my Love, I won't hesitate
I will give him all that his heart can take
And I'll trust Him fearlessly
I want Him to be free

Marz

One two three four...*

Bittersweet strawberry marshmallow butterscotch
Polarbear cashew dixieland phosphate chocolate
My tutti frutti special raspberry, leave it to me
Three grace scotch lassie cherry smash lemon free

I wanna go to Marz
Where green rivers flow
And your sweet sixteen is waiting for you after the show
I wanna go to Marz
We'll meet the gold dust twins tonight
You'll get your heart's desire, I will meet you under the lights

Golden champagne juicy grapefruit lucky monday
High school footall hot fudge buffalo tulip sundae
Almond caramel frappe pineapple rootbeer
Black and white pennyapple Henry Ford sweetheart maple tea

I wanna go to Marz
Where green rivers flow
And your sweet sixteen is waiting for you after the show
I wanna go to Marz
We'll meet the gold dust twins tonight
You'll get your heart's desire, I will meet you under the lights

Where Dreams Go To Die

Your Beauty is Unstoppable, your confidence unspeakable*
I know you know I know you know, that I know that you know
I'm willing to do anything, to get attention from you dear, even
Though I don't have anything that I could bargain with

This is like a well-oiled machine, could I please see that smile again?
It's all that makes me feel like I am living in this world, I see you closing
all the doors, I see the walls as they go up, I know it's what you have to do
I'd probably do the same thing to, my dear

Baby, you are where dreams go to die, and I regret the day
Your lovely carcass caught my eye, baby, you are where dreams go to die
And I've got to get away I don't want to but I have to try, oh baby

You have to play your part my dear, I've written it all down for you
It doesn't matter if the things, you say to me aren't true,
Just do it then I'll let you go, just say the words and say them slowly
I promise i'll tell no one, yes I cross my heart and hope to die

Baby, you are where dreams go to die, and I regret the day
Your lovely carcass caught my eye, baby, you are where dreams go to die
And I've got to get away I don't want to but I have to try, oh baby

Oh baby, please.

Sigourney Weaver

When I woke up today, the air was very strange
I couldn't feel my skin and there was evil in my bones
I tried to speak but found that I didn't have a voice
It was a prison like the one you would find in the twilight zone

And I feel just like Sigourney Weaver
When she had to kill those aliens
And one guy tried to get them back to the earth
And she couldn't believe her ears

So I was taken or I went towards what was west
Where the ground was dead and struck out at the giant sky
The sky was black and filled with tiny silver holes
And it was there with the frightened voice that I began to cry out loud

I feel just like Winona Ryder
In that movie about vampires
And she couldn't get that accent right
Neither could that other guy

And I feel just like I am on Jupiter
'The one that looks like rainbow sherbet'
But it doesn't lend itself to life
And I haven't finished yet.

Chicken Bones

When I got out of my bed this morning
I noticed that it didn't have a right side
And my head feels like it's filled to the top
With pop and rocks and cyanide

There's an earthquake coming and you think you know
Where it started, but it started very long ago
I need a mongoose baby, and some calgon to take me up outta here

Some days just chicken bones
You'd better fuck off now, you'd better leave me alone
Cos I'm about to explode, just like a wonderbread bomb
And I don't care what I know, because I can't be wrong
Some days just chicken bones
You'd better fuck off now, you'd better leave me alone
Cos I'm about to explode, just like a wonderbread bomb
And I don't care what I know, because I can't be wrong

Yes I know why you need it, cos your car broke down
And you wanna take the next bus outta this town
But if anybody's getting on the bus, dog, it's gonna be me

I know I don't need what you've got for me
Baby I do feel ready for me
You'd better watch out sugar, cos I'm about to get my old spice on

Some days just chicken bones
You'd better fuck off now, you'd better leave me alone
Cos I'm about to explode, just like a wonderbread bomb
And I don't care what I know, because I can't be wrong
Some days just chicken bones
I'm all jacked up on DC at my place alone
And I don't care what you think about my attitude
Because I can't be bothered with the likes of you

Some days just chicken bones
You'd better fuck off now, you'd better leave me alone
Cos I'm about to explode, just like a wonderbread bomb
And I don't care what I know, because I can't be wrong
Some days just chicken bones
I'm all jacked up on DC at my place alone
And I don't care what you think about my attitude
Because I can't be bothered with the likes of you.

Silver Platter Club

I wish that I could get up in the early morning time*
Things would fall out of the sky into my lap

I wish I had the brain of a tyrannosaurus rex
So that I wouldn't have to deal with all this crap

I wish that I'd been born with skin that turned to golden brown
While at the beach relaxing in the summer time

I wish that I was good at football, baseball and lacrosse
Darts and basketball, and poker, golf and chess

I'm sorry that they didn't hand it to me
On a silver platter, like they did to you
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to become
The man you think I should aspire to

I wish I had the genes of Edwardo Verastegui
That I was effortlessly masculine as well

I wish that confidence was all you could see in my eyes
Like those interviews in locker rooms with talented sports guys

I wish I had no self-awareness like the guys I know
Float right through their lives without a thought

And that I didn't give a shit what anybody thought of me
That I was so relaxed you'd think that I was bored

I'm sorry that they didn't hand it to me
On a silver platter, like they did to you
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to become
The man you think I should aspire to

I'm sorry that they didn't hand it to me
On a silver platter, like they did to you
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to become
The man you think I should aspire to

I'm sorry that they didn't hand it to me
On a silver platter, like they did to you
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to become
The man you think I should aspire to

I'm sorry that they didn't hand it to me
On a silver platter, like they did to you
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to become
The man you think I should aspire to

I'm sorry that they didn't hand it to me
On a silver platter, like they did to you

(Was that my other one?)

It's Easier

I don't know who I thought I was
I guess I tried to love you, because I thought I could afford
To take the risk and take a chance
I do not know who I thought I was fooling
I must have felt invincible in your arms, like I could take
the whole world on

But it's easier for me, to believe that you are lying to me, when you say you love me
and when you say you need me, yes it's easier for me to walk away and get on with my life
If I believe that you're deceiving me, if I believe that you'd be leaving me one day, be leaving me one day

I wish that I could make you see, but clearly that is not to be, 'cause you will not be swayed by me, you've made it clear, you must be free, I would have sacrificed for you, I would have been so
loyal and so true, but gifts this precious can't be offered up by fools

And it's easier...

What's done is done, I cannot change the way I feel, and what's more I am certain that I don't
regret a single thing, but sometimes I really miss your sweet sweet love and wish that I'd wake up and this would all be just a dream

yes, it's easier.

Outer Space

I still don't know what I'm looking at*
Cause I've never seen anything like this before
I have a friend who's an astronomer
And he says he cannot help me
Cause he doesn't have a clue

I think that you must be from outer space
Maybe from somewhere beyond the stars
I think you must be extraterrestrial
Cause you can open up the heavens for me
With just one smile, just one smile, just one smile

What is that sound coming out of your mouth
Cause I've never heard anything like that before
It sounds like a language from another galaxy
I wanna thank you cause you opened the door

I think that you must be from outer space
Maybe from somewhere beyond the stars
I think you must be extraterrestrial
Cause you can open up the heavens for me
With just one smile, just one smile, just one smile

JC Hates Faggots

I've felt uncomfortable since the day that I was born
Since the day I glimpsed the black abyss in your eyes
There's no way you could make all of this shit up on your own
It could only come from the mastermind with eyes

I can't believe that I've considered taking my own life
Cos I believed the lies about me were the truth
It will be magic to watch your transformation when you realise that you've been had
It's enough to make a guy like me feel sad

Cos you tell me that
Jesus
He hates fruit loops, son,
We told you that when you were young
Or pretty much anything you want him to
Like sitcoms, pedophiles and kangaroos
Morons who cut and line
Three-bean salad and parking fines
And when we win this war on society
I hope your blind eyes will be opened and you'll see

The arrogance it takes to walk around in the world the way you do
It turns my brain to jelly every time
The rage and fear I'm feeling have begun to make me sick
And I think that I might be about to commit a crime

And you tell me that
Jesus
He hates homos son
We told you that when you were young
Or pretty much anything you want him to
Like coco puffs, red cars and jews
Postal clerks who waste your time
Weight loss shakes, and the local news
And when we win the war on society
I hope your blind eyes will be opened and you'll see

Cos Jesus,
He hates faggots, son
We told you that when you were young
Or pretty much anyone you want him to
Like niggers, spicks, redskins and kikes
Men who cannot tame their wives
Weaklings, cowards, and bald dikes,
And when we win the war on society
I hope your blind eyes will be opened and you'll see.

Caramel

My love is the rarest jewel
And he crowns me with his love
My love he is rich like caramel
And he moves me from above

He sees me with tiger eyes
And that’s where I make my home
His heart is a shield which protects me from the vilest foe
His smiles an elixir which heals the wounds of my darkest years
My love is quiet I consider him and he drives away my fears

My love he reveals himself with tenderness and grace
My love has constructed with his arms for me the safest place
His laughter destroys my doubts and lifts me up so high

His voice it is soothing like a warm breeze on a summer night

When he envelops me I give myself to him and my soul takes flight

Leopard And Lamb

Read your letter and finally I could cry
But I don't really understand exactly why
I guess I cried because I knew it was the end
No more hate now, just learning to begin

Learning how to crawl across a floor that's covered with glass
Learning how to look away and never to look back

I cannot fathom how we dragged it for so long
And I think we both know which one of us was wrong
But now I'm asked to act as if I didn't feel
Anything from you, my friend, and it's a bitter pill to swallow

You're right, this world is cold and all that I can do
Is banish every thought of you, because you are so cruel

Watch the Simpsons to remember how you laugh
I miss your dark blue eyes, and staring at your back
My leopard, my lamb

You're right, this world is cold and all that I can do
Is banish every thought of you, because you are so cruel
Like learning how to crawl across a floor that's covered with glass
Like learning how to look away and never to look back

Queen Of Denmark

I wanted to change the world
But I could not even change my underwear
And when the shit got really, really out of hand
I had it all the way up to my hairline
Which keeps receding like my self-confidence
As if I ever had any of that stuff anyway
I hope I didn't destroy your celebration
Or your Bar Mitzvah, birthday party or your Christmas
You put me in this cage and threw away the key
It was this 'us and them' shit that did me in
You tell me that my life is based upon a lie
I casually mention that I pissed in your coffee
I hope you know that all I want from you is sex
To be with someone who looks smashing in athletic wear
And if your haircut isn't right you'll be dismissed
Get your walking papers and you can leave now

Don't know what to want from this world
I really don't know what to want from this world
I don't know what it is you want to want from me
You really have no right to want anything from me at all
Why don't you take it out on somebody else?
Why don't you bore the shit out of somebody else?
Why don't you tell somebody else that they're selfish?
Weepy coward and pathetic ...

Who's gonna be the one to save me from myself?
You'd better bring a stun gun and perhaps a crowbar
You'd better pack a lunch and get up really early
And you should probably get down on your knees and pray
It's really fun to look embarrassed all the time
Like you could never cut the mustard with the big boys
I really don't know who the fuck you think you are
Can I please see your license and your registration?

Don't know what to want from this world
I really don't know what to want from this world
I don't know what it is you want to want from me
You really have no right to want anything from me at all
Why don't you take it out on somebody else?
Why don't you bore the shit out of somebody else?
Why don't you tell somebody else that they're selfish?
Weepy coward and pathetic ...

So Jesus hasn't come in here to pick you up
You'll still be sitting right here ten years from now
You're just a sucker but we'll see who gets the last laugh
Who knows, maybe you'll get to be the next queen of Denmark

Autumn in Literature

Image
William Shakespeare personified autumn in Sonnet 73:

“That time of year thou mayst in me behold

When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang

Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,

William Blake - “O autumn laden with fruit” - and John Keats with his “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”  both wrote odes “To Autumn”.

In the simply-titled “Autumn” John Clare noted “The summer-flower has run to seed / And yellow is the woodland bough / And every leaf of bush and weed / Is tipt with autumn’s pencil now”.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning told us in “The Autumn” that “Waving woods and waters wild / Do hymn an autumn sound”, while a poet she influenced, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, wrote “Know’st thou not at the fall of the leaf / How the heart feels a languid grief” in “Autumn Song”.

Some of these celebrate the maturing year while others mourn its aging. It’s a matter of state of mind and art.

The less familiar Anglo-Welsh poet Edward Thomas also addressed the theme of falling leaves and an end of things in his more month-specific poem “October”:

“The green elm with the one great bough of gold

Lets leaves into the grass slip, one by one, --

The short hill grass, the mushrooms small milk-white,

Harebell and scabious and tormentil,

That blackberry and gorse, in dew and sun,

Bow down to; and the wind travels too light

To shake the fallen birch leaves from the fern…”

But leave it to Edgar Allan Poe in “Ululame” most mournfully to use the month as a metaphor for sorrow and loss, particularly referencing the death of a woman – a subject distressingly close to Poe:

“The skies they were ashen and sober;

The leaves they were crisped and sere -

The leaves they were withering and sere;

It was night in the lonesome October

Of my most immemorial year….”

There are more optimistic opinions of October, of course. Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885) reckoned that “Suns and skies and clouds of June / And flowers of June together / ye cannot rival for one hour / October’s bright blue weather”.

The great bucolic New England poet Robert Frost seemed to have mixed feelings in “October”, concentrating on the stillness and maturation of the month, the gradual shortening of the days and the almost teasing, nature of the slow turn towards winter, beseeching the month to keep the harsher weather at bay:

"O hushed October morning mild,

Begin the hours of this day slow.

Make the day seem to us less brief.

Hearts not averse to being beguiled,

Beguile us in the way you know.

Release one leaf at break of day;

But to end on a thoroughly cheery note, here are words from “Old October” by a poet from the American Midwest, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916). He was known as the “Hoosier Poet”, often writing in Indiana dialect which we can follow well enough.

Like Edward Thomas he cites the elm tree in the first few lines:

“Old October's purt' nigh gone,

And the frosts is comin' on

Little HEAVIER every day--

Like our hearts is thataway!

Leaves is changin' overhead

Back from green to gray and red,

Brown and yeller, with their stems

Loosenin' on the oaks and e'ms;

And the balance of the trees

Gittin' balder every breeze--

Like the heads we're scratchin' on!

Old October's purt' nigh gone.”

But Riley is not lamenting the onset of October, rather its ending, likening this to the departure of a friend. Hickory nuts falling, he suggests, are the sound of tears falling at the sadness of this departure:

"I love Old October so,

I can't bear to see her go--

Seems to me like losin' some

Old-home relative er chum--

'Pears like sorto' settin' by

Some old friend 'at sigh by sigh

Was a-passin' out o' sight

Into everlastin' night!

Hickernuts a feller hears

Rattlin' down is more like tears

Drappin' on the leaves below--

I love Old October so!"

John Vance Cheney: Tears & The Happiest Heart

Image

Tears (1892)

  • Not in the time of pleasure
    Hope doth set her bow;
But in the sky of sorrow,
    Over the vale of woe.

Through gloom and shadow look we
    On beyond the years!
The soul would have no rainbow
    Had the eyes no tears.

    • The Century Vol. 44, Issue 4 (August 1892)

The Happiest Heart

  • Who drives the horses of the sun
    Shall lord it but a day;
Better the lowly deed were done,
    And kept the humble way.
  • The rust will find the sword of fame,
    The dust will hide the crown;
Ay, none shall nail so high his name
Time will not tear it down.
  • The happiest heart that ever beat
    Was in some quiet breast
That found the common daylight sweet,
And left to Heaven the rest.

Tyler Ward Feat. Jess Moskaluke: We Found Love (by Rihanna)

Yellow diamonds in the light
And we're standing side by side
As your shadow crosses mine
What it takes to come alive

It's the way I’m feeling I just can't deny
But I've gotta let it go

We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place

Shine a light through an open door
Love and life I will divide
Turn away cause I need you more
Feel the heartbeat in my mind

It's the way I'm feeling I just can't deny
But I’ve gotta let it go

We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place

Yellow diamonds in the light
And we're standing side by side
As your shadow crosses mine...

We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place

We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
